Mexico now has a federal law that all smoking is illegal in public spaces. I think this is because vape got out of control with the kids but that is just my guess. Mexico seems to have permits to allows certain cigar lounges to continue to allow cigar smoking but I have not researched the laws only seen the signs saying this is a permitted smoking area.

In Mexico City I went to Cigar Point  Whiskey House in the Norte Roma neighbourhood. A hip neighbourhood with great restaurants and generally a nice safe place for a day or evening walk.

We walked the neighbourhood before and after a cigar and had a great Mexican dinner and listened to some amazing blues.

Cigar Point is on the second floor of a Mercado Roma (photo) food market with all types of delicious food and a hoping craft beer market out front.

Cigar Point is a stand-alone business that has its glass humidor right at the front door. (PICTURE) It has a very good selection of Cuban cigars at a decent but not great price. They also had a decent selection of non-Cuban cigars that I did not try.

I went to Cigar Point twice during my week in Mexico City. I had a H. Upmann Magnum and a 52. Both were good but moist. I don’t put my cigar down, so it does not really bother me. I had a negroni (not great) and an old fashion (better) and the second night another negroni (better) both were 140 pesos (about $12 CND).

The first night I purchased 6 Cuban cigars to take with me and they had a tip function with the credit card terminal. I just had a chuckle and told them I would pay a tip (for the drinks) in cash. I gave them 50 peso and that was not an issue.

There are lots of cigar style seats in comfortable but worn chairs inside with large cigar ashtrays at ever table and a nice patio with restaurant set up for eating outside. The bar seemed well stocked with the usual and had a very impressive whiskey selection. Everywhere at Cigar Point you can enjoy a drink, a cigar and order food from the market below.

The service at Cigar Point was on point. They spoke enough English to make ordering painless and never let my drink get empty.

Cigar Point played nice relaxing music both nights that made for nice ambiance (I think it was Genesis concert or something like that) and they had MLB on the TV’s both times.

The crowd seemed like a mix of visitors and locals. It seemed that regulars were coming in an buying a cigar all night. Some stayed and some just bought them and left.

Inside was an open-air concept so the smoke just disappeared naturally. It was like having the comfort of being at an inside lounge but being open. It was covered so even if it rained it was enjoyable. There were signs that said smoking was forbidden but ashtrays at every table and it seemed like more of a formality than being a requirement.

I really enjoyed the visit, the space, selection, market and the neighbourhood at Cigar point.

When in Mexico City I would definitely make Cigar Point Whiskey House a part of my tour for at least one or two visits
